Small Steps, Big Moves

Writer: Sarah Vita PasconeSarah Vita Pascone

What big life moves do you dream of making?

Us humans seem to be brimming with hope and big dreams, whether we're willing to admit it or not. The question becomes whether we're willing to do what it takes to get there. Often we're not for two reasons 1) fear of change and 2) because we think that big dreams require a big move.

But, the secret is that any big dream or goal is really just a bunch of small moves compounded over time.

In fact, we see this principle at play with nearly every external, observable victory: losing weight, writing a book, starting a business, getting a degree, buying a house...

These big, applaud worthy moves are all evidence that a person has been consistently chipping away a little at a time: one workout, one paragraph, one bold step, one class, one dollar at a time.

The big external changes that people can see-- the ones we often chase as markers of success--are only evidence of small consistent changes behind the scenes. That's why they feel so big and impossible when we first imagine them; we see the end result, but it's hard to fathom the thousand little changes we need to make in order to get there.

The true magic of making big moves is not the material things that accompany our vision of success, but who we become in the process.

So, whatever big dreams are calling you, start small. Identify the one small step you need to take each day to get there. The work becomes tolerating the monotony and pain of sticking with it day in, year out.

This approach has transformed nearly every facet of my life the past eleven years. Before I start the brag fest that I can sense simmering underneath all of the big changes that have occurred in my life as a result of this approach, I'll close with an invitation to reach out and ask.

What big moves are you ready to make?

Start small and if you're looking for support, accountability, strategy or community... I've got you.
